Field Trips That Make Waves!

Transform your next school outing into an unforgettable coastal experience!
Your students will:

Signature Programs

Manatee 101: Meet Florida's Gentle Giants

Take a deep dive into the fascinating world of manatees—our beloved state marine mammal and a keystone species in the Indian River Lagoon.

This interactive program explores:

  • The unique behaviors and adaptations of manatees
  • How these gentle giants help shape the ecosystem
  • The threats they face and what we can do to help
  • Why manatees are a symbol of conservation in Florida

Students also enjoy an inside tour and a close-up look at our mangrove tank, where they’ll meet the manatee’s lagoon neighbors.
Inspires empathy, awareness, and a sense of stewardship.

Seining: Catch the Knowledge

Wade into science with this immersive shoreline adventure, offered seasonally at local parks in Fort Pierce.

During this hands-on field experience, students will:

  • Use seine nets to safely collect marine life in shallow water
  • Observe and identify native fish and invertebrates
  • Explore lagoon biodiversity and food web connections
  • Learn how scientists use data to monitor estuary health

From mullet to mystery critters, every catch is a chance to discover something new.
Seasonal program offered April–October.

Learn on the Lagoon: Eco Boat Tour

Take learning to the water with a guided educational boat tour on the Indian River Lagoon!

This unforgettable experience invites students to:

  • Explore the lagoon’s ecosystems from a new perspective
  • Learn about mangroves, seagrasses, and local wildlife
  • Gain insight into human impacts and conservation strategies
  • Possibly spot dolphins, manatees, sea turtles, and native birds!

Launching from the Fort Pierce City Marina, this program combines science, storytelling, and sightseeing for a one-of-a-kind learning adventure.
Great for upper elementary through high school learners.

Critters To Go: We Bring the Lagoon to You

If you can’t come to the Manatee Center, we’ll bring a splash of the Indian River Lagoon to you!

Our Critters To Go program is a fun, educational experience that introduces audiences to the fascinating marine animals that share the manatee’s habitat—like horseshoe crabs, sea stars, and more.
This show-and-tell style presentation features:

  • Live marine animals from our mangrove tank
  • Engaging storytelling and interactive demonstrations
  • Fascinating insights into each creature’s adaptations and ecological role
  • A deeper appreciation for the Indian River Lagoon and the importance of conservation
