2024 - 2025 Board Members
After graduating from UF in 2000, Caleta enjoyed a private sector sales and operations management career in Atlanta, GA, before moving to her birthplace of Fort Pierce in 2015. As a community engagement coordinator with Indian River Lagoon National Estuary Program, she enjoys connecting the dots between the people and the science of protecting the IRL. Her previous local government roles have given her valuable experience in community revitalization, strategic planning, and public health.
Zoë joined the Friends of the Manatee Center as a board member in June, 2023. As an Environmental Analyst, her expertise lies in natural resource ecology, water quality, and collaborative governance. In being part of the board, Zoë works to incorporate her scientific perspective into the long- and short-term goals of The Manatee Center.
A science communicator with a passion for writing, design, and photography, Elise discovered her passion for environmental outreach while working with the Air Potato Biological Control Program at the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services. She has since served in multiple roles with UF/IFAS extension and continues to gain and share her expertise in the fields of entomology and horticulture.
Mike has worked in the utility industry for over 18 years, currently filling the role of Operations Supervisor and Project Manager for Fort Pierce Utilities Authority’s Water Reclamation department. Being an FDEP licensed wastewater plant operator, Mike understands the stakes of how environmental pollution can harm Florida’s precious waterways like the Indian River Lagoon and its manatee population. Mike has a Master of Business Administration from Georgia Southwestern State University and is currently pursuing his Doctor of Public Administration from Valdosta State University.
Jessica is the Manager of the Manatee Center in Downtown Fort Pierce, focusing on operations, visitor experience, and community engagement. She holds a graduate degree in Public Management from Carnegie Mellon University and leverages her expertise to strengthen the Center’s role as a community resource. With extensive experience leading nonprofit organizations, she has successfully implemented strategic initiatives, expanded outreach efforts, and enhanced operational efficiencies. Her leadership ensures the Center delivers meaningful experiences and fulfills its mission in Fort Pierce.
Hannah Atsma has passion for protecting aquatic habitats and wildlife. Along with a M.S. in Entomology from the University of Florida, she has experience in conservation, community outreach, and working with citizen science programs. Hannah is excited to support the Manatee Center’s mission by helping connect people with nature and promoting the protection of Florida’s waterways.
Manatee Center 5K – Fundraiser for Conservation & Education
The Friends of the Manatee Center 5K, One-Mile, and Kids Run on Saturday, March 22, 2025, is the only annual fundraiser supporting the Manatee Center’s environmental education and conservation efforts. As the Center’s nonprofit partner, Friends of the Manatee Center relies on this event to fund programs that inspire curiosity, connect people with nature, and protect the Indian River Lagoon.
